The Most Common Podcasting Myths Debunked

The Most Common Podcasting Myths Debunked

Some people discover podcasts and become hooked. Others become so fascinated that they actually consider giving it a try.

Unfortunately, if you are like most people, it is also likely that you’re stressing out about the things that are not working in your favour—you’re not tech-savvy, you don’t have any experience, you don’t have a fancy studio, the list can go on.

You’d be delighted to know however that most of those things you’re scared about are nothing more than myths. And we’ll put your mind at ease by debunking some of them.

Myth #1 You need to be tech-savvy

While it may seem like all podcasters have the whole tech game all figured out, it is reassuring to know it’s not always the case. If truth be told, even the most brilliant and successful podcasters has had their share of challenges and setbacks especially when they first started out.

That being said, you don’t have to be tech-savvy to be a podcaster. The thing is if you’re willing to put in the needed work, you’ll be able to have the whole process mastered in no time. Also, nowadays, there is no shortage of training programs and tutorials you can find online on podcasting.

If anything, the biggest hurdle you need to overcome is getting over your fear of technology. Of course, it will seem daunting at first especially if you’re still trying to find your way around. However, as long as you are passionate and you’re willing to learn, you’ll do just fine.

Myth #2 You need to have a fancy home studio

Let’s be clear about something. When you’re starting out, you don’t need an elaborate home studio. A setup under $100 can already get you up and running. Of course, that’s given you already have a computer or laptop.

When it comes to podcasting, the following are deemed the basics: headphone, microphone, and audio editing software. You have the option to download Audacity for free or you can subscribe to Adobe Audition for your audio editing needs.

Understandably, you’ll commit mistakes along the way—your audio might be crappy, you may sound nervous, you might spend hours editing just one episode. The good thing is you also have the option to get expert help whenever you deem fit. For instance, if editing is taking so much of your time, the team at Podcast Engineers can help you out and polish things for you.

Myth #3 You need to have a radio voice

If you’re like most people, it is likely that you don’t like the way your voice sounds on the recording. Oftentimes however, you don’t really sound as bad as you think you do. And even if you have a unique voice, it’s not really something that’ll automatically work against you.

Case in point: the host of “This American Life” podcast Ira Glass does not have the typical radio voice but his listeners love him. Why? Because he is an exceptional storyteller who’s also interesting, authentic, and sincere.

As long as you’re passionate about what you do and you have a valuable content and message to impart, how you sound will be the least of your listeners’ concern.

Myth #4 You need to have substantial presenting or radio experience

While a radio or presenting experience can come in handy, it’s not necessary. As long as you have a burning passion for what you’re doing and a genuine willingness to connect with your listeners, the rest should come easy. If anything, know that you’ll get better at podcasting as you go along.
